Make a Door County Resort Your Home Base for Local Fitness Events
January and resolutions seem to go together – especially resolutions focused on fitness. For many people, training for and finishing a fitness event is an important objective during the coming year. Door County is home to numerous fun fitness activities where you can meet that goal while enjoying beautiful scenery. While training for a fitness race, such as a half-marathon or a 50-mile bike ride, don’t forget one key step: finding a place to stay. A Door County resort, especially Door County beach resorts, provide a great home base for your fitness activities. There is no better place to stay than Bay Breeze Resort. Located in Ephraim, you would be just a short distance from the many events happening in Door County this year.
The Door County Half Marathon & Nicolet Bay 5K kicks off Door County’s fitness races on May 7. That weekend will be a great time to celebrate your success on the course through Peninsula State Park with your family, since it is also Mother’s Day weekend.
The first cycling ride of the year comes on June 18th. The Peninsula Century Spring Classic offers riders several races of different lengths, including 100 miles, a metric century ride of 62 miles, a 50 mile ride and a 25 mile ride. The ride includes a post-ride dinner. Viewing Door County from a bike is a wonderful experience that shouldn’t be missed.
For people who enjoy biking, running and swimming, mark your calendars for the Door County Triathlon on July 16 and July 17. Saturday is the full iron course, while Sunday features the half distances.
In the fall, for cyclists looking to make their “big” ride, the Door County Century leaves from Sturgeon Bay and is scheduled for Sept. 11, while the the Peninsula Century Fall Challenge leaves from Sister Bay and is held on Sept. 17. Both rides offer a variety of distances for cyclists to choose from. For walkers and short-distance runners, the Challenge Walk MS is planned for Sept. 16-17 and encourages participants to walk 50 miles over two days (a shorter 30 mile version is also available) to raise money for MS while the Hey Hey 5K returns for its second year on Sept. 24 and kicks off Baileys Harbor’s Autumnfest Weekend.
Those are just a few of Door County’s fitness activities. There is also the Fall 50, a 50-mile race in October that brave souls can run themselves or friends and family members can team up to run different legs. The date for 2016 isn’t set yet, but it is always a good time.
